La Sirena Grill

Established in the summer of 1999 in a charming old cottage on Mermaid Street in downtown Laguna Beach, and turned out to be the perfect place for an eatery. Thus was founded La Sirena Grill, named for the street where the dream was born. The concept was simple: combine the quality of a fine food restaurant with the speed of a fast-food eatery-all in a casual, rustic atmosphere. Contemporary-Mexican in flavor, all dishes are fresh, healthy, and made from scratch. The careful craft that goes into the dishes is obvious when you taste the spicy chicken tortilla soup that owner Scott Cortellessa sort of created by accident. A popular addition to any dish at La Sirena is the aqua frescas, especially the watermelon and strawberry blend. It’s made by blending an entire watermelon (including seeds but not the rind) with a batch of fresh strawberries, water, a bit of sugar (depending on the sweetness of the fruit) and a secret ingredient. The drink is sweet and refreshing and you can taste the watermelon pulp in every slip. As you can see from the picture, there are only three seats inside and room for about a dozen more on an outdoor bench and five tables, so when the lunch or dinner rush hits, people look for a place – any place – to sit and enjoy their burritos and tacos. Some enjoy their food from the curb or a nearby doorway. Sometimes it’s standing room only!
